Spatial frames of reference in Yucatec: Referential promiscuity and task- specificity
نویسنده
چکیده
A referential communication task conducted with five pairs of native speakers of Yucatec Maya produced evidence of “referential promiscuity” in the selection among spatial frames of reference (FoRs): speakers switched freely between FoRs and pervasively combined multiple types in single descriptions. In contrast, a recall memory experiment conducted with 18 speakers revealed a strong bias towards responses consistent with the use of geocentric, as opposed to egocentric, FoRs. It is argued that referential promiscuity makes FoR selection more taskspecific, preventing the linguistic conditioning of spatial reference in internal cognition that has been predicted for populations with more constrained linguistic usage.

Speech and Gesture in Spatial Language and Cognition Among the Yucatec Mayas
In previous analyses of the influence of language on cognition, speech has been the main channel examined. In studies conducted among Yucatec Mayas, efforts to determine the preferred frame of reference in use in this community have failed to reach an agreement (Bohnemeyer & Stolz, 2006; Levinson, 2003 vs. Le Guen, 2006, 2009). This paper argues for a multimodal analysis of language that encomp...

1. Introduction In this chapter, we introduce and discuss the hypothesis that the pervasive use of shape-based meronymy as a resource for the expression of spatial relations in a language may bias its speakers against the use of relative frames of reference (FoRs). This hypothesis is currently being tested in the project " Spatial Language and Cognition in Mesoamerica " (MesoSpace). The Mesoame...
متن کاملThe role of semantic value in lexical comparison: motion and position roots in Yucatec Maya*
Approaches to lexical semantics often rely on denotational overlap with English words (or their systematized scientific offspring) to establish the meanings and groupings of lexemes in other languages and typically ignore the local facts of morphosyntactic distribution and characteristic denota tional range. By contrast, this paper illustrates the importance of morpho syntactic distributional...
متن کاملNo Metaphorical Timeline in Gesture and Cognition Among Yucatec Mayas
In numerous languages, space provides a productive domain for the expression of time. This paper examines how time-to-space mapping is realized in Yucatec Maya. At the linguistic level, Yucatec Maya has numerous resources to express deictic time, whereas expression of sequential time is highly constrained. Specifically, in gesture, we do not find any metaphorical oriented timeline, but only an ...
متن کاملThe role of attention for the Simon effect.
It has been claimed that spatial attention plays a decisive role in the effect of irrelevant spatial stimulus-response correspondence (i.e., the Simon effect), especially the way the attentional focus is moved onto the stimulus (lateral shifting rather than zooming). This attentional-movement hypothesis is contrasted with a referential-coding hypothesis, according to which spatial stimulus codi...
